Telefónica drives the digitalization of operational management across Negratín’s energy projects

Negratín energy project in Colombia digitalized in collaboration with Telefónica

Telefónica has deployed a new project management model for Grupo Negratín based on advanced digitalization technologies that will transform the way the company manages large-scale energy projects.

Negratín, a global company of Spanish origin specializing in integrated solutions for the energy sector, has partnered with Telefónica to incorporate IoT connectivity, real-time location and intelligent access control capabilities. Together, these technologies provide continuous, centralized and real-time information on activities across complex energy projects.

These solutions are already being implemented at Negratín projects in several rural locations in Colombia: La Mina, La Tabla and, shortly, Tropezón. Together, the projects represent 38.4 MWp of photovoltaic capacity under construction, accounting for approximately 10% of the Group’s activity. While the initiative is currently being piloted in Colombia, the solution is expected to be progressively deployed across other Negratín energy plants in the future.

Enhanced services to improve efficiency

In an environment characterized by increasingly complex energy projects and growing pressure on schedules and efficiency, on-site operational management — including workforce coordination, material control and access management — has become a critical factor in ensuring successful project execution.

The digitalization of these processes enables a transition from manual and decentralized models to systems based on real-time information, improving operational visibility and strengthening control capabilities.

Through these tools, Negratín can continuously monitor the location of equipment in the field, manage access to different project areas and track the movement of critical materials. This enables more effective task planning and improved coordination among the different stakeholders involved.

Javier Vizcaíno, Director of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises at Telefónica Spain, said:

“This project originated after the company saw a demonstration of the system during a visit to our LaCabina innovation center in Madrid. We took on the challenge of becoming the best gateway for companies to access digital technologies, providing them with more and better services through our most advanced solutions so they can become more competitive and better equipped to address the challenges they face.”

David Torrego, Energy & Installations Managing Director at Negratín, explained:

“Digitalizing operational control on site enables us to move toward a more efficient, safer and data-driven execution model. Our collaboration with Telefónica is key to enabling robust connectivity and real-time management, improving team coordination and strengthening our control capabilities across complex projects.”

Applied innovation for smarter project execution

Supported by Telefónica’s connectivity infrastructure, the system enables continuous data updates and the management of 215 devices and assets on site. The resulting data is integrated into project operations to support decision-making.

In addition to improving efficiency, the implementation of these solutions strengthens operational traceability and raises safety standards through more accurate monitoring of on-site presence and material flows.

This initiative forms part of Negratín’s strategy to integrate digitalization as a key driver of continuous improvement in its execution model. It is aligned with the company’s approach to applied innovation focused on operational efficiency, technical control and risk management across energy projects.
